"Anjoye" meaning in Middle English

Proper name

IPA: /anˈd͡ʒɔi̯(ə)/, /ˈand͡ʒɔi̯(ə)/ Forms: Angeoy [alternative], Angeoye [alternative], Angoy [alternative], Angoye [alternative], Angoiȝe [alternative], Aungeye [alternative, Late-Middle-English]
Etymology: Borrowed from rare Anglo-Norman Anjoie, possibly from Latin Andecāvia; although the development of Old French aiuel and jaiole from Late Latin *aviolum and caveola superficially indicates that the expected outcome of Andecāvia would be *Anjaie (Late Middle English Aungeye probably reflects vowel reduction rather than a reflex of this; see caroyne), the form can be explained by either a divergent development of Proto-Romance /aβʲ/ when stressed or levelling of the /ɔ/ of Old French Anjou (from Andecāvum, Andegāvum).
